Description:
STA PURPOSE

WNEG(AM) RECEIVED SPECIAL TEMPORARY AUTHORITY ON MARCH 31, 2020 TO OPERATE WITH 500 WATTS AT VARIANCE FROM ITS DAYTIME LICENSED POWER OF 5000 WATTS. FOR SEVERAL MONTHS WNEG HAS EXPERIENCED TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS DUE TO THE CONDITION OF ITS TOWER, SPECIFICALLY OUR ENGINEER CONCLUDED THAT FRACTURES IN THE GUYED WIRE INSULATORS CAUSED ELECTRICAL SHORTS IN THE TOWER WHICH PREVENTED OUR LATE MODEL SOLID STATE TRANSMITTER FROM OPERATING AT THE LICENSED DAYTIME POWER. THE BOTTOM 180 FEET OF OUR TOWER WAS INSTALLED IN 1956 WHEN WNEG BEGAN OPERATIONS ON 1320 KHZ AND THE TOP 120 FEET WAS ADDED IN 1961 WHEN THE STATION RELOCATED TO ITS PRESENT OPERATING FREQUENCY OF 630 KHZ. WNEG INCREASED POWER FROM 500 WATTS TO 5000 WATTS DAYTIME IN APRIL 2012. IMPROVEMENTS MADE TO THE TOWER HAS ALLOWED US TO RESTORE DAYTIME POWER TO 3,500 WATTS BUT FURTHER TIME IS NEEDED TO MAKE ADDITIONAL REPAIRS TO THE GUYED WIRES. LICENSEE GEORGIA-CAROLINA RADIOCASTING COMPANY, LLC, REQUESTS MODIFICATION OF THE EXISTING STA, BESTA-20200323AAD, OR CANCELLATION OF THAT AUTHORIZATION AND THE ISSUANCE OF A NEW STA TO AUTHORIZE DAYTIME OPERATIONS OF 3,500 WATTS UNTIL FURTHER REPAIRS CAN BE MADE TO THE TOWER IN ORDER FOR FULL POWER TO BE RESTORED.
